Search Engine Registration
Registration is the process of telling a search engine that you
have a web site at a particular URL (Internet address). In theory
Search Engines should visit (or 'spider') your web site at some
point during their automated crawl through the WWW. In practice,
they just can't keep up with the amazing growth rate of the web.
As a result, even the biggest engines only manage to index less
than 20% of the available material out there - though Google has
recently claimed a quantum jump in capacity to over one billion
pages due to a new link following process.
It is not enough just to register once when a site is first launched,
it must be done on a routine basis - perhaps once a month.
The top fifteen or so engines are responsible for about 90%+ of
all Search Engine traffic, so you don't have to worry about dealing
with hundreds of registrations. You can do your own registration,
but it takes time and needs to be done in the right way. Use of
mass submission software that blasts hundreds of engines all at
once is not advised - many engines simply detect high speed multiple
submissions and ignore them.
Directories (human compilations, not software driven like search
engines) such as Yahoo! need a different approach. Yahoo! is notoriously
difficult to get into, but is well worth the trouble and must be
handled with care - you normally only get one shot at getting listed.
Sound like a lot of time and hassle? We can handle this for you
as part of a regular maintenance routine.
